Title

Mary Mataw Clarke ( 18--? -1968)

Description

Funeral program for Mary Mataw Clarke of Birmingham, Alabama. Clarke was a pianist; music teacher; organist and director of music at Birmingham's prestigious Sixteenth Street Baptist Church; and the matriarch of one of her city's most prominent musical families.

Clarke's daughter, Mary Alice Clarke Stollenwerck, would follow her mother's footsteps as longtime director of music at Sixteenth Street Baptist Church; Mary Alice was also a pioneering woman in Birmingham's jazz community, a mainstay of Fess Whatley's Vibra-Cathedral and Sax-o-Society orchestras. Mary Mataw Clarke's sons -- Pete, Richard, Charles, and Arthur Clarke -- would enjoy careers in the bands of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Chick Webb, and other major jazz figures.

Program provided by Carol Clarke.
