Frank Adams describes the musical culture of Birmingham’s segregated Black schools. In the opening portion of this excerpt, Adams reads from a lecture he was preparing for the University of Alabama at Birmingham, exploring the history of jazz and education in the city. Later in the excerpt, Adams goes off script to elaborate on the culture of Black fraternal parades, as seen through the eyes of a 1930s schoolboy. This interview was conducted by Burgin Mathews in Adams’s office at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, October 10, 2009.
