Description

1940 songbook for Birmingham, Alabama, radio personality Happy Hal Burns. Includes selections of Spirituals, Songs of Romance, Hymns, and Western Ballads, in addition to photos, "Inspirational Thoughts," and endorsements of Burns's sponsor, the American Snuff Company.

Note: One of this booklet's advertisements presents a racist depiction of the minstrel perfromer "Chocolate Kid"; song lyrics also incorporate racially stereotyped dialect. The songbook is presented here, in full, for educational purposes and as an artifact reflective of its time. The Southern Music Research Center stands against racism and prejudice in any form.
