Ad: Sonny Blount and Others at the Grand Terrace (1943-1944) (1)

Description

Newspaper advertisement for Sonny Blount's "New Style Rhythm Band" at the Grand Terrace, Christmas 1943. Featured performers include, in addition to Blount's band, singer Fletcher "Hootie" Myatt (misidentified here as Fletcher Myles) and "Mammy Blues Singer" Lillian Harris and her All-Star Revue. Similar advertisements, accompanied by photos of the Grand Terrace's "typical" nightlife, appeared frequently in the Weekly Review in this period. Blount -- the future Sun Ra -- would be the Grand Terrace's central weekend attraction from the fall of 1943 through spring, 1944.
