Brothers Charles ("Chuck") and Arthur ("Babe" or "Bayboy") Clarke perform with the Men of the Great Lakes Experience Navy Band, World War II. Like musicians across the country -- including many Birmingham jazz players -- the Clarke brothers found a home during the Second World War in Armed Services bands like the one seen here, which was stationed in Providence, Rhode Island.
According to Birmingham's Carol Clarke, her father Chuck (pictured at left), is almost certainly shouting "Blow, man!" as his younger brother takes the solo.
During the war years, many of these bands were noted for the celebrated jazz sidemen who filled their ranks. Also seen here, on bass, is Arvell Shaw, best known for his work with Louis Armstrong,
