Frank Adams on Sun Ra's Induction to The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame

Title

Frank Adams on Sun Ra's Induction to The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame

Description

Adams recalls an encounter with Sun Ra at Ra's induction, in 1979, to the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in Birmingham, Alabama.

Born in Birmingham in 1914, Herman Poole "Sonny" Blount would become famous as the iconoclastic, visionary jazz bandleader and composer Sun Ra. As a teenager in the 1940s, Frank Adams performed in Blount's Birmingham orchestra; at the time of this recording, Adams was one of the last surviving members of that early band and offered rare insight into Sun Ra's earliest years.

Blount left Alabama in 1946 and did not return until his induction, in 1979, to the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. In this story, Adams recalls his reunion with his old bandleader at that event -- and flashes back to an earlier memory that revealed Sun Ra's extraordinary character.

Recorded by Burgin Mathews, August 7, 2009, in Birmingham, Alabama.
