Description

Erskine Hawkins (1914 – 1993), publicity photo, c. 1939. The Erskine Hawkins Orchestra, begun at Alabama State Teachers’ College as the ‘Bama State Collegians, developed into one of Black America’s leading dance bands. Nearly all the band’s members grew up together in Birmingham, learning music in the band rooms of Tuggle Institute, Lincoln School, and/or Industrial High School. Their biggest hit, “Tuxedo Junction,” paid homage to the Ensley, Alabama, dance spot of the same name, where many of the players received early inspiration and professional experience.
