Description

Army band practice at Camp McClellan, near Anniston, Alabama, in a 1918 postcard.

The Southern Music Research Center archive includes two copies of this postcard. One, addressed to Miss Mary Sewell in Jacksonville, Alabama and signed "Your classmate Albert," includes this handwritten note on the front of the card:

We have a fine band in our company. They march out to the flag which is about two hundred yards from my barrack, and play ten or fifteen minutes every evening. They play Star Spangled Banner and others.

The back of the card includes this message:

Dear Mary;

I sure was glad to get your words of cheer, but "law" I reckon Santa does not come to warm climates. It never has seemed like Xmas has passed.

I hope you will have a good prosperous year in school. No I never shall forget the dear old school days at [illegible -- G. U.?]

Many good wishes for your happiness,

Your classmate Albert

A second copy of this card is addressed to Mr. T. S. Lennox in Glenford, NY, and reads on the back:
