Southern Harmony: Birmingham-Southern Alma Mater

Title

Southern Harmony: Birmingham-Southern Alma Mater

Description

Birmingham-Southern College Alma Mater, in an arrangement by Hugh Thomas, performed by Southern Harmony: Thomas Head (tenor, Class of 1985), Kyle Bass (lead, Class of 1986), Daniel Potts (baritone, Class of 1987), and Thomas Waters (bass, Class of 1986).

Thomas Waters writes: "Southern Harmony is grateful to offer our love for BSC though our music — and especially this arrangement of the Alma Mater by Dr. Hugh Thomas. HT arranged this for Dr. Thomas Head, Dr. Daniel C. Potts, Kyle Bass and me over 25 years ago. We are privileged to sing it for you."

The Alabama Music Educators Association notes that Hugh Thomas (1912-2002) — a decades-long fixture in the culture of Birmingham-Southern — "began his long association with the college in 1936 and retired from the faculty in 1982. He became dean of the Conservatory of Music in 1947, was chairman of the Department of Music from 1964-72, and directed the Concert Choir from 1964-93."

Thomas's arrangement of the BSC Alma Mater appears on Southern Harmony's 2020 album Meet Southern HarmonySee the group perform it on campus in the video below:
