Description
Postcard for Birmingham, Alabama's Industrial High School, postmarked 1941. Under the direction of John T. "Fess" Whatley, Industrial (later renamed Parker) High School's instrumental music program produced numerous professional musicians who would make their livings in jazz.
Caption reads: "This high school for Negroes began in 1900 with 18 students. The first class of 15 graduated in June 1904. At the close of 1937 the enrollment was over 2700, and there have been 5113 graduates."
