Title

The Ripple Rhythm Four: "Making Name In The Radio World"

Description

Newspaper photo, with caption, featuring the Ripple Rhythm Four, a popular quartet directed by Sonny Blount (the future Sun Ra, seen here second from left). Originally the Rhythm Four, the group's name here reflects a sponsorship by the Ripple Tobacco Company; its other major sponsor was RC Cola.

Caption reads: "Birmingham boys who are making a name for themselves in the radio world. The Ripple Rhythm Four who broadcast over WSGN at 12:30, Mondays through Fridays. Reading from left to right they are: Morris Ridgl [sic?], Sonny Blount, Richard Cannon and Clarence Driskell."

Coverage in both the city's Black newspapers (the Birmingham World, the Alabama Voice) and its white newspapers (the Birmingham News) reflects the broad popularity of the group across segregated Birmingham. For newspaper advertisements promoting the group, see our separate file of Birmingham Jazz ads.
