Description

Sidney Louie "Hardrock" Gunter (1925-2013) poses with fans at Pennsylvania's Santa Fe Ranch. The Birmingham, Alabama-born country musician got his start in the 1930s as a member of the Hoot Owl Ramblers and, then, Happy Wilson's Golden River Boys. His first two singles on the Bama record label -- "Birmingham Bounce" and "Gonna Dance All Night," both released in 1950 -- are regarded today as important precursors to the rock and roll sound.

These photos and others in our archive were taken by a fan at Shorty Long's Santa Fe Ranch, a country music venue near Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1953.
