Music Memories Monthly

From 1961-1965, Cather was publisher and editor of his own magazine, Music Memories Monthly ("Covering all phases of music collecting," the tagline read). The publication included extensive listings of 78 RPM records available for sale or trade by mail, alongside original articles on blues and jazz history. In addition to Cather's own research and writing, the magazine featured contributions by nationally prominent critics, record producers, and researchers. In 1963, the magazine merged with the California-based Jazz Report to become Music Memories and Jazz Report

The Southern Music Research Center archive includes two issues of the magazine. The April 1963 issue (pictured here) is particularly notable for its cover story on Cather's friend and frequent collaborator, pianist Robert McCoy; the same year's winter issue includes a rare photo of Birmingham's Fred Longshaw Orchestra, along with "Blues News" from Arhoolie Records founder Chris Strachwitz and a brief autobiographical essay by Western Swing pioneer Leon "Pappy" Selph. Also of interest throughout both issues are advertisements for Cather's Vulkan record label.
